JUDAISM AND RELIGIOUS SERVICES

Our congregation is served by a rabbi who is available for religious inquiries, such as matters related to the life cycle or, for example, kosher food. Inquiries should be made through the congregational office.

Prayer

According to the Jewish faith, we strive to pray three times a day. In addition to the synagogue services, there are three minyan associations operating in Viipuri that organize prayer activities.

The Elderly / Seniors

Vyborg has vibrant activities for people of all ages. Welcome to join us and find out everything we can offer a spirited, "forever young" person like you!

Cheder Activities

Since there is no Jewish school in Vyborg, our community organizes Cheder activities after the regular school day ends. In these sessions, children and youth are taught the Jewish religion and the Hebrew language.

Youth

There is highly active Jewish youth programming in Viipuri for all ages. From theater to Zionist activities focused on Israel, we strive to provide our young people with excellent opportunities for engagement. All activities are led by volunteers.

Kosher Meat

Kosher meat, slaughtered by our Rabbi, can be purchased from the butcher Makkonen in the Market Hall (Kulmahalli, located in the Repola district). Please note that Makkonen has two separate counters in his shop: one counter sells only so-called "ordinary" meat, while the other sells strictly kosher meat.

Mikveh

The congregation does not have its own mikveh (ritual bath); therefore, members wishing to use a mikveh should contact the Helsinki Jewish Congregation, where the nearest mikveh in Finland is located.

The writings on this website are largely based on Jukka Hartikainen's research: "Stages of the Jewish Community in Vyborg" and the Ahdus magazine published by the Jewish Congregation of Vyborg in 1933. Furthermore, the photographic material originates for the most part from the National Archives' collection of Jewish Congregations and partly from Jukka Hartikainen’s research.

This website was implemented by Yaron Nadbornik during the years 2015–2016.

Ariel Nadbornik provided invaluable assistance in the project.

The construction of the website has been supported by the South Karelia Regional Fund and the Jewish Community of Helsinki.
