Weekly News

The world watches Viborg as the heart of Finnish Jewry. In the work of building Palestine, too, we progress more effectively than the communities of other Finnish cities. How many times have we had the opportunity to hear words coming straight from the hearts of the city's respected community members: "Ahdus is our child; have we not given birth to it and presented it to the world, and how we groan when we see it neglected and abandoned."

It is true, "Ahdus" is your legitimate child, except that it is already nearly 15 years old—long may it live!—yet it still speaks hardly a word. The Viborg Jewish community is obligated to help the child acquire its language, and let the child speak to other cities. This current issue still looks like an embryo, and only if the Viborg Jewish community so desires will this embryo one day become a respect-inspiring adult, bringing honor to the entire Jewish population of Finland.

The writings on this website are largely based on Jukka Hartikainen's research: "Stages of the Jewish Community in Vyborg" and the Ahdus magazine published by the Jewish Congregation of Vyborg in 1933. Furthermore, the photographic material originates for the most part from the National Archives' collection of Jewish Congregations and partly from Jukka Hartikainen’s research.

This website was implemented by Yaron Nadbornik during the years 2015–2016.

Ariel Nadbornik provided invaluable assistance in the project.

The construction of the website has been supported by the South Karelia Regional Fund and the Jewish Community of Helsinki.
